Somaliland opens new container port

A new port has been officially opened in the self-declared republic of Somaliland which should help boost exports between the Horn of Africa and the Gulf Region. The container port is also potentially of huge benefit to land-locked Ethiopia, which is currently reliant on Djibouti for shipping its exports and imports. Last month the Addis Ababa government and Dubai’s DP World - one of the world's largest port operators – agreed a $1bn (£720m) deal to create a trade and logistics corridor between Ethiopia and Berbera. Somalia violence: Rival units fight amid row over president's term

Fighting has broken out in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, between different sections of the security forces. Reports said heavy weapons were used and mortar rounds were fired near the presidential palace. Some of the military units support President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed while others are opposed to him. Last week Mr Mohamed - known as Farmajo - controversially approved a two-year extension of his term in office. His mandate officially ended in February. The move was strongly criticised by the international community including the UN and the African Union. Somali president 'ready to fight al-Shabab' Reports from Mogadishu on Sunday said what started as localised clashes spread to other parts of the city including central areas. Local media said the fighting was between pro-government forces and military units that support the opposition, but some former warlords and clan leaders are also involved in the clashes. Congolese artist's emotional appeal for Goma victims

A Congolese musician, Tresor Riziki, has launched an appeal to raise funds for communities affected by the recent volcanic eruption of Mount Nyiragongo, near the city of Goma. The appeal is in partnership with the UN refugee agency, the UNHCR, and will support their emergency response on the ground. Tresor who was born in Goma told the BBC's Focus on Africa that the eruption evoked memories of a similar experience he had in 2002. "I thought because I am in a better position I have a voice and platform I should be able to assist this time I should be able to step in and assist," he said. Tresor who lived as a refugee in South Africa says he still has family and friends in Goma. "The people there are very strong and have a very resilient spirit, slowly they are starting again to try to rebuild and trying to figure a way to work around the current situation," he said.
